Biography

Born in Withington, South Manchester, Carol grew up in a family of Jewish musicians, and part of her family band The Jacksons (no not that one!). Mum played piano, her father was a drummer and her younger sister played clarinet and sang vocals. Carol was also a vocalist and learned the piano and guitar. During her teenage years, she set up a band Black, Brown and Beige with two girls from school, performing folk music on guitar with vocal harmonies.

In her 20s, Carol joined her first professional band, Jenny & The Heartbeats after learning the bass guitar for the audition!  The band supported UK soul band the Equals in Israel, and then performed at Air Force bases in Germany, Switzerland and Italy.  Carol stayed in Germany with the drummer and formed another band – Sweet Dreams.

Returning to the UK in 1972, she joined Mecca Ballrooms, playing in the resident band at Tiffany’s in Manchester.  She married the keyboard player Alan and they set up their own recording studio.  In 1984 she then joined a band called Lemon Tree. Appearing on TV, alongside Terry Wogan and Paul Daniels at the London Palladium and raising money for Children in Need.

However, traditional Jewish music has always run parallel to Carol’s jazz and popular music career.  She met other Jewish musicians through her synagogue and, she always included Jewish folk and traditional songs in her repertoire as well as continuing to perform Jewish music with her family.
