Biography
South Asian Performer, teacher and choreographer, Kanchan Maradan was born in Mumbai and has been dancing since childhood. She has completed an MA in Kathak, one of the classical dances of India, under the guidance of Prerana Shrimali, doyen of Jaipur Gharana. She is also a trained Indian vocalist.
A registered artist with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) since 2004, she received the Junior Fellowship from the Indian Ministry of Culture, from 2005-2007. She has been performing since 1997 and teaching since 2000 and has performed extensively around the world, including in Brazil, France, India, Japan, Russia, Sweden and the UK. She has also worked with world-famous film director Fernando Meirelles.
In addition to mastering the more traditional Indian classical dance techniques, Kanchan has taken classes in many other dance forms and is particularly skilled at fusing styles as diverse as Flamenco, Classical Ballet, Tango, African Gumboot, Salsa, Jazz, Indian and Brazilian folk dances.
